From the recovered audio journals of Miles Conroy

“I wish I could’ve brought Rosco home to bury. I’d have put him to rest under the mimosa tree in the back yard. Not that it was a place of any real significance, but he must’ve taken a thousand shits under that tree over the years. Even that would’ve been more fitting than the nondescript Douglas fir I had to bury him under. Worse, I couldn’t even really bury him, so I use the term loosely. I must’ve pored through the cabin twenty times, and the closest I can find to a shovel is a damned spoon. So, I dug what I could with my hands and then covered him with spruce boughs and rocks that I collected around the property.”

[A weak sniffle]

“The snow has all but melted. It won’t be long before he starts to stink. I don’t know what I’ll do then. I can’t even bring myself to think about it.”

[A deep breath]

“I’ve decided to try hunting. I found a little hiking pack in the linen closet. It was empty, but between that and my computer bag, at least I’ll be able to carry things without dangling a handkerchief from a stick like a hobo.”

[A forced chuckle]

“It would be nice to lean on some sort of methodical plan, but the truth is I don’t have one. I don’t have a gun. I don’t have the skillset to make any kind of hunting weapon, save for a crudely sharpened stick. I’m thinking I’ll try some snares. Maybe I’ll get lucky. I’ll have to, because there’s nothing left to eat around here. I figure I have another day or two in me before I do the unthinkable, and I can’t bear the thought of defiling Rosco just to live a few more days.

“Anyway, even if I don’t get anything, there’s a chance I might find Mr. Fairland’s place. It’s supposed to be around here somewhere. Kind of a long shot, I know.”

[A tired sigh]

“I plan to pack as much water as I can carry, but I’m worried. Water is heavy, and I’m exhausted. I can’t even put into words how little energy I have anymore.”
